In Sri Lanka, efforts to strengthen the Blue Economy and safeguard the country's marine zone are being supported through scientific and practical initiatives. Marking the occasion, the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) and the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) are launching the inaugural International Conference on Marine Science and Sustainability (ICMSS 2026) and introducing the “Ocean Watch” mobile application to enhance ocean conservation through technology.
The observance also highlights growing threats to marine ecosystems, including plastic pollution, overfishing, climate change, and the loss of marine biodiversity, emphasizing the need for collective action by governments, institutions, and individuals.
Beach clean-up campaigns, awareness programmes, educational workshops, and environmental conservation activities are being held worldwide to mark the occasion.
