A SriLankan Airlines flight arriving from Melbourne, Australia, made an emergency landing at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake last night (01) following smoke detected in its cargo bay.
The flight, UL 605, landed safely at 10.38 p.m. with 258 passengers and 15 crew members on board. Emergency services, including firefighters, medical teams and ambulances, had been placed on standby following a warning from the pilot.
Subsequent inspections revealed that the smoke had originated from dry ice used to preserve a consignment of meat stored in the cargo compartment, SriLankan Airlines confirmed.
