The official recommencement ceremony will be held at the Department of Motor Traffic premises in Werahera. Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, Bimal Rathnayake, is scheduled to attend the event.
According to a senior DMT official, the printing of vehicle number plates was halted on May 16, 2025, due to issues related to the tender process for number plate production.
To restart the service, the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development and the Department of Motor Traffic signed an agreement with South Asian Technologies on March 10 this year.
Officials stated that during the one-year suspension, a backlog of more than 400,000 vehicle number plates accumulated. The pending plates include those for motorcycles, three-wheelers, cars, vans, buses, and other vehicle categories.
Of the total backlog, nearly 200,000 motorcycle number plates remain to be printed and issued, highlighting the significant demand that has built up over the past year.
The resumption of number plate printing is expected to help clear the accumulated applications and facilitate the registration process for thousands of vehicle owners across the country.
