The Irrigation Department has issued a flood warning for low-lying areas along the Attanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya valleys following heavy rainfall in the upper and middle catchment areas and water releases through the spill gates of the Basnagoda Reservoir.

The Department said water levels in the Attanagalu Oya Basin have been rising, raising concerns about possible flooding in vulnerable areas.

The warning covers low-lying areas in the Divisional Secretariat divisions of Divulapitiya, Mirigama, Attanagalla, Mahara, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, Ja-Ela, Katana and Wattala.

The warning was issued following an analysis of water levels recorded at river gauging stations across the basin, the Department said.

Residents in the affected areas have been urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions amid the risk of rising water levels and localised flooding.

Motorists travelling through these areas have also been advised to exercise caution, as flooding could affect road conditions and disrupt traffic.

Meanwhile, disaster management authorities have been requested to take appropriate precautionary measures in response to the developing situation.
