The Department of Meteorology has issued a red warning for strong winds and rough seas in the deep-sea areas of the Bay of Bengal, urging naval and fishing communities to avoid the affected waters.
The department said the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, near the North Andaman Islands, is very likely to develop into a depression today (October 24).
The system is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a deep depression by October 25, before developing into a cyclonic storm over the west-central Bay of Bengal by the morning of October 26.
Accordingly, naval and fishing communities have been advised not to venture into the deep-sea areas bounded by latitudes 10°N to 20°N and longitudes 85°E to 95°E until further notice.
Those already operating in the affected sea areas have been urged to move to safer locations.
Based on data available today (October 24), the department said there is a high probability of the formation of a depression within the next 24 hours.
Naval and fishing communities have also been advised to remain vigilant and closely monitor future weather forecasts and bulletins issued by the Department of Meteorology.
