The Department of Irrigation has warned that the water level of the Kala Oya is nearing flood level following significant rainfall in the upper and middle reaches of the river basin.

In a notice, the department said there is a risk of flooding in low-lying areas along the lower reaches of the river valley and surrounding areas within the Rajanganaya, Nochchiyagama, Wanathavilluwa and Karuwalagaswewa Divisional Secretariat divisions.

The department further stated that spill gates of the Rajanganaya Reservoir have been opened, with water being released into the Kala Oya at a rate exceeding 13,200 cubic feet per second.

The volume of water being released could increase further depending on the amount of water flowing into the reservoir, the department warned.
