The Department of Irrigation has opened four spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir by two feet each due to prevailing heavy rainfall.
As a result, water is being released from the reservoir at a rate of 5,600 cubic feet per second, the department said.
Authorities have urged communities living downstream of the reservoir and those using the Deduru Oya to remain vigilant and exercise caution due to the increased water discharge.
