The bus priority lane system in Colombo and surrounding areas will be reintroduced from today (29), the Government has announced.
The system will operate from 6.00 a.m. to 9.00 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.
Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake said the programme will initially be introduced as a pilot project.
President of the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association, Gemunu Wijeratne, said the association would extend its full support to the programme.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Manoj Ranagala of the Police Traffic Management and Road Safety Division said all police officers have been instructed to take legal action against motorists who violate the bus priority lane rules.
Meanwhile, Metro Bus Company said Metro buses will begin operating on five additional routes from today.
Company Chairman U.P. Thilakaratne said a total of 122 Metro buses are expected to be deployed under the expanded service.
