Habib Rifan was sworn in as a National List Member of Parliament representing the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) before Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne today.
Rifan, a lawyer from Oddamavadi, Batticaloa, was appointed to the SLMC's vacant National List seat for one year.
The seat became vacant following the resignation of SLMC National List MP M.S. Abthul Wazeeth, whose resignation took effect on September 14. Parliament subsequently informed the Election Commission of the vacancy.
SLMC Secretary Nizam Kariapper said Rifan's selection was made under the party's rotational arrangement for the National List seat. His participation in the recent Local Government elections at the party's request and the lack of parliamentary representation for the Kalkudah electorate were also considered, he said.
Rifan will serve as the SLMC's National List MP for the next year.
