A motorcycle repair shop near the Mattegoda Housing Scheme was completely destroyed in a sudden fire this afternoon (23), with property damage estimated at more than Rs. 10 million.
Mattegoda Police said the fire broke out while an attempt was being made to remove the fuel tank of a motorcycle brought to the shop for repairs.
No injuries or fatalities were reported.
However, 10 motorcycles, an electric generator and a large quantity of repair equipment and other property were completely destroyed in the fire.
Police officers, including the Officer-in-Charge of the Mattegoda Police Station, with the assistance of area residents, took immediate measures to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby shops.
Two fire engines from the Kotte Fire Department were later deployed to the scene, and the fire was completely extinguished, police said.
