Heavy falls about 100 mm are likely at some districts

The low-pressure area that has formed over the Andaman Sea region of the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify further over the next few days. Although this system will not have a direct impact on Sri Lanka, the prevailing rainy conditions in the southwestern part of the island are expected to continue due to the wind flow towards the system.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya Districts.  Heavy falls about 100 mm are likely at some places in the above areas.

Several spells of showers may occur in North-central province and Mannar district.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in Uva province and in Batticaloa and Ampara districts after 2.00 p.m. 

Fairly strong winds of about (30-40) kmph can be expected at times over Western slopes of the Central hills, North-central and North-western provinces and in Trincomalee, Hambantota and Matale Districts.

The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

WEATHER FORECAST FOR SEA AREAS AROUND THE ISLAND DURING NEXT 24 HOURS

The low-pressure area that has formed over the Andaman Sea region of the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify further over the next few days.

Due to its influence, wind and rainy condition over the Bay of Bengal will increase.  Navel and fishing communities engaging the activities over this sea areas are advised to be vigilant and be attentive to the future forecasts and bulletins issued by the department of meteorology in this regards.

Condition of Rain:

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankasanthurai to Hambanthota via Puttalam, Colombo and Galle.  Showers or thundershowers may occur at several places in the other sea areas during the evening or night.

Winds:

Winds will be South-westerly. Wind speed will be (30-40) kmph. 

Wind speed can increase up to (50-60) kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. Wind speed can increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar.

State of Sea:

The sea areas off the coast extending from   Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times.  The sea areas off the coasts extending from Puttalam to Kankasanthurai via Mannar will be fairly rough at times. 

The wave height may increase about (2.0 – 2.5) meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Matara.

Temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
