A member of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s family has denied media reports that, former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, left the country despite being summoned by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID).
Speaking in response to the reports, the family member said Shiranthi Rajapaksa had travelled directly to the airport from a private hospital, where she had been receiving treatment.
The family member further claimed that Shiranthi Rajapaksa had not previously been summoned by the FCID to appear and provide a statement.
According to the family member, a letter from the FCID was handed over to her by an airport official near the boarding gate shortly before her scheduled departure. Her flight was due to leave at around 12:50 a.m. today (16).
The family member said the notification was therefore delivered only after Shiranthi Rajapaksa had arrived at the airport and was preparing to leave the country.
The family member further maintained that no prior summons had been issued to Shiranthi Rajapaksa by the FCID before her arrival at the airport, and that the relevant letter was handed over to her only at that point.
