A total of 111 Members of Parliament, including Cabinet Ministers and Deputy Ministers, have been allocated housing units at the Madiwela MP Housing Complex in Kotte for a monthly rental fee of just Rs. 2,000, according to information released under the Right to Information (RTI) Act.
The details were disclosed by the Department of the Secretary-General of Parliament in response to an RTI request, with Assistant Secretary-General Hansa Abeyratne providing the relevant information.
According to the records, the current occupants comprise four Cabinet Ministers, nine Deputy Ministers and 98 other Members of Parliament representing both the government and opposition.
The Cabinet Ministers listed as residents are Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandrasekar, Minister of Women and Child Affairs Saroja Savithri Paulraj, Minister of Plantations and Community Infrastructure K.V. Samantha Vidyarathna, and Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply Dr. Susil Ranasinghe.
The nine Deputy Ministers allocated housing at the complex are Wasantha Piyatissa, Nalin Hewage, Gamagedara Dissanayake, Namal Sudarshana, R.M. Jayawardena, Ratna Gamage, Arun Hemachandra, T.B. Sarath and Namal Karunaratne.
The RTI response further states that all monthly rental payments from MPs residing at the complex are currently up to date, with no outstanding rental arrears recorded.
The disclosure has drawn attention to the highly subsidized accommodation provided to lawmakers, with each allocated unit carrying a monthly rent of Rs. 2,000.
