Sri Lanka’s total gross public debt declined to USD 97.952 billion (LKR 32.977 trillion) by the end of June 2026, down from USD 102.267 billion at the end of March, according to the Quarterly Statistical Debt Bulletin for June 2026.
The bulk of the country’s public debt was held by the central government, which stood at USD 95.047 billion (LKR 31.999 trillion) at the end of June.
Central government domestic debt amounted to USD 57.039 billion (LKR 19.203 trillion). Of this, USD 54.838 billion was denominated in Sri Lankan rupees, while USD 2.201 billion was foreign exchange-denominated debt.
Central government external debt stood at USD 38.008 billion (LKR 12.796 trillion). This included USD 10.797 billion in bilateral borrowings, USD 14.802 billion in multilateral loans and USD 12.409 billion in market borrowings.
Debt held by provincial councils and local government institutions amounted to USD 20 million (LKR 7 billion). The bulletin recorded no debt for provincial councils, with the entire amount attributed to local government entities.
Meanwhile, debt guaranteed by the government on behalf of state-owned enterprises stood at USD 2.885 billion (LKR 971 billion). This comprised USD 1.405 billion in rupee-denominated debt and USD 1.480 billion in foreign exchange-denominated debt.
The figures were calculated using the exchange rate as of June 30, 2026, with USD 1 equivalent to LKR 336.6623.
