The second Randoli Perahera of the historic Kandy Esala Perahera Festival is scheduled to take to the streets of Kandy tonight (24), with heightened security and special traffic arrangements in place, police said.
The procession is scheduled to depart from the vicinity of the Sri Dalada Maligawa at 7.00 p.m., heading east. It will proceed along Dalada Veediya, D. S. Senanayake Veediya, Colombo Street, Yatinuwara Veediya, Raja Veediya, E. L. Senanayake Veediya, Cross Street and D. S. Senanayake Veediya before returning via Raja Veediya.
Police said a special security and traffic management plan has been implemented for the duration of the Perahera. The measures include roadblocks, security deployments, vehicle and pedestrian checks, guidance for tourists and a special parking arrangement.
The historic Kandy Esala Perahera Festival began on August 18 and will continue until August 28.
The first Randoli Perahera was held last night (23). During the procession, the sacred casket was carried by Wasana, an elephant belonging to the Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devalaya. The elephants Sinha Raja and Pulathisi Raja, from the Sri Dalada Maligawa elephant herd, walked on either side of the casket.
Authorities have urged the public and visitors attending the Perahera to follow security instructions and cooperate with traffic management measures.
