The Department of Irrigation has warned of a possible minor flooding situation in the Nilwala River Basin within the next 24 hours.
According to the department, low-lying areas within the Nilwala River floodplain in the Akurassa, Athuraliya, Malimbada, Kamburupitiya, Thihagoda and Matara Divisional Secretariat divisions are at risk.
The warning was issued following significant rainfall in the upper and middle catchment areas of the Nilwala River and an analysis of water levels recorded at river gauging stations.
The department has urged residents in the affected areas, as well as motorists travelling through these locations, to remain vigilant.
Disaster management authorities have also been informed to take the necessary precautionary measures.
The flood warning will remain in effect until 6.00 p.m. on October 16, 2026.
