Aimed at enhancing tourism and improving passenger transportation, the Cabinet has approved a proposal to conduct a feasibility study on launching a comprehensive marine and inland water transport service across several regions of the country.

The initiative, proposed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, seeks to leverage the country's extensive coastline and inland waterways to establish new boat services connecting key destinations. Planned routes include Puttalam to Fort, Fort to Galle, and Galle to Matara, among others.

Additionally, the project envisions developing inland water transport networks using underutilized waterways such as the Hamilton Canal, Beira Lake, Diyawanna Oya, and Madu River. These enhancements are expected to significantly contribute to tourism promotion while easing passenger mobility.

The approved proposal allows for a detailed feasibility study, after which the project is expected to be implemented as a public-private partnership. The government plans to create the necessary infrastructure to support the initiative, with a focus on sustainability and economic growth.

Officials express optimism that this development will attract both local and foreign tourists, boost regional economies, and offer a scenic and efficient mode of transport.
