The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has issued an urgent request to all solar energy producers to temporarily suspend rooftop solar power generation during the daytime from April 13 to April 21.
The directive comes in response to an unusual drop in national electricity demand during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year season.
In an official statement, the CEB explained that the decrease in energy usage, combined with the high contribution of variable renewable energy sources like solar power, is causing instability in the national grid.
The board emphasized that the grid’s system inertia has significantly dropped, increasing the risk of partial or even nationwide outages due to minimal fluctuations in supply and demand.
To mitigate this risk and maintain grid stability, solar power producers are requested to deactivate their systems daily until 3:00 PM throughout the specified period.
The CEB assured that this is a temporary measure to protect the integrity of the power supply system during a time of unusually low demand and urged the cooperation of all renewable energy contributors.
