suspect arrested with over 1142kg of smuggled dried turmeric

A special search operation conducted by the Sri Lanka Navy in the Daluwa area of Norochcholai resulted in the interception of a cab, while smuggling about 1142kg and 700g of dried turmeric. The operation also led to the apprehension of a suspect in connection to this smuggling act.

 

The Navy conducts regular patrols and search operations covering the coastal areas around the island to curb illegal activities including smuggling, via sea routes.

In continuation of these efforts, the operation was conducted by SLNS Vijaya belonging to the Northwestern Naval Command. Upon search of the suspicious cab in Daluwa area, naval personnel recovered the smuggled stock of dried turmeric, approx 1142kg and 700g, stuffed in 31 sacks. 

Thus, the stock of dried turmeric, the cab and the suspect in connection to this illegal act were taken into naval custody.

The suspect is a resident of Madurankuliya area, aged 27. The suspect along with the stock of dried turmeric and the vehicle was handed over to the Customs Preventive Office, Katunayake for onward legal action
