The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued Level 1 (Yellow) early landslide warnings for several areas in the Galle, Kalutara, Matara, and Ratnapura districts due to continued heavy rainfall across parts of the island.

The warnings, which are in effect until 4:00 p.m. tomorrow (April 11), are aimed at alerting residents and local authorities to the increased risk of landslides, slope failures, rock falls, and subsidence in vulnerable areas.

The affected areas include:

  • Galle District: Elpitiya Divisional Secretariat Division and surrounding areas
  • Kalutara District: Walallawita Divisional Secretariat and surrounding areas
  • Matara District: Pitabeddara Divisional Secretariat and surrounding areas
  • Ratnapura District: Ratnapura and Kalawana Divisional Secretariats and surrounding areas

NBRO urges the public living in these areas to remain vigilant, especially those residing near steep slopes or areas with a history of landslides. Emergency services and local authorities have been alerted to respond quickly if needed.

Residents are advised to watch for early signs of ground movement such as cracks in walls or the ground, tilting trees or fences, and unusual sounds like rumbling or water seepage, and to evacuate to safer locations if necessary.

The NBRO continues to monitor the situation closely and will issue further updates as required.
