Suspended Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon was granted bail today (10) by the Matara Magistrate's Court, following his production before the court in connection with a high-profile shooting incident.

Tennakoon was released on bail under two sureties of Rs. 1 million each. The court order comes after he was previously remanded, having surrendered to the court on March 19.

The former police chief had absconded for nearly 20 days before turning himself in, following the issuance of an arrest warrant linked to a shooting incident near a hotel in the Pelena area of Weligama in December 2023.

The incident, which sparked widespread attention, led to a legal battle that culminated in his arrest and subsequent remand. Tennakoon's surrender was made through a motion filed with the court, after remaining in hiding for nearly three weeks.

Further hearings into the case are expected as investigations continue.
