The Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation announced the launch of a pilot project this week to enable electronic card payments on expressways in Sri Lanka.
As part of the trial run, commuters will be able to use debit and credit cards, as well as QR code scanning, to pay tolls at the Kottawa and Kadawatha interchanges. The initiative marks a significant step towards modernizing the toll collection system and improving convenience for expressway users.
The Ministry stated that, following the successful completion of this pilot phase, card payment facilities are expected to be expanded to all expressway interchanges across the country by May.
This move is part of a broader push to digitize transport infrastructure and reduce reliance on cash transactions in Sri Lanka.
