On March 31, 2025, a key meeting was held at Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Centre to discuss the country's response to the devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28.

The earthquake, which has claimed at least 1,700 lives and left many others missing, has wreaked havoc in areas such as Mandalay and Naypyidaw, with widespread destruction and people trapped under collapsed buildings.

The meeting, led by the Director General of the Disaster Management Centre, brought together representatives from various sectors, including the Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Health, and the Sri Lanka Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police. Additionally, United Nations agencies and both local and international non-governmental organizations participated in the discussion. The focus was on coordinating swift and effective humanitarian aid to the affected regions.

The earthquake has created an urgent need for rescue teams, medical supplies, and essential aid for the survivors. Given the longstanding historical, religious, and socio-economic ties between Sri Lanka and Myanmar, the Sri Lankan government has expressed its commitment to providing immediate assistance. Emergency response teams are set to be deployed to assist Myanmar's government in their efforts to rescue and support the people impacted by the disaster.

Sri Lanka’s government and humanitarian organizations are now focused on organizing emergency medical aid, search-and-rescue operations, and ensuring that relief efforts are well-coordinated and delivered swiftly to mitigate further suffering. This concerted response is in line with the Sri Lankan government’s ongoing dedication to international solidarity in the face of natural disasters.

As the situation continues to develop, Sri Lanka remains committed to supporting Myanmar's recovery and assisting in the efforts to rebuild the affected communities.
