Sri Lanka has shown remarkable improvement in its security situation, according to the 12th annual Global Terrorism Index (GTI) report for 2025. Released on March 5, the report ranks Sri Lanka 100th out of 163 countries, signaling a notable decline in the impact of terrorism in the country. Despite this progress, Sri Lanka shares the lowest GTI score of zero with 63 other nations, indicating that there have been no recorded terrorist attacks or deaths in the past five years.

The GTI report highlights South Asia as the region with the highest average GTI score in 2024, a position it has held for the past decade. However, the region also saw a deterioration in scores this year, largely driven by escalating terrorism in Pakistan. Despite these challenges, all South Asian countries, including Sri Lanka, have shown an overall improvement in countering terrorism compared to a decade ago.

Sri Lanka’s achievements are particularly significant as the country marked its fifth consecutive year of no recorded terrorist attacks or deaths, with 2024 being the most improved year for the nation. Bhutan, another South Asian country, also shares the zero score, further emphasizing the region's progress.

In contrast, the report notes that Afghanistan and Pakistan remain among the ten countries with the worst GTI scores, contributing to South Asia's high average GTI score. Nevertheless, Sri Lanka's continued success in counterterrorism efforts is a positive indicator of the country's growing stability.

The GTI report serves as a crucial reminder of the strides made by Sri Lanka and other South Asian nations in combatting terrorism, paving the way for a more secure and peaceful future in the region.
