Sigiriya, one of Sri Lanka's most iconic UNESCO World Heritage sites, has been honored with the prestigious Green Destinations Bronze Award at the ITB 2025 Convention in Berlin.

This esteemed recognition highlights Sigiriya's outstanding achievements in nature conservation, heritage preservation, waste management, energy efficiency, and climate action, marking a significant milestone in Sri Lanka's commitment to sustainable tourism.

The award was presented during the ITB Berlin Convention, a premier global event in the tourism industry, which took place from March 4 to 6, 2025, at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds. The convention's theme for 2025, "The Power of Transition Lives Here," focused on sustainability and the transformation of the tourism industry.

In 2024, the ITB Berlin Convention attracted 24,000 visitors and hosted a comprehensive program across four stages with a total of 17 themed tracks. The event continues to serve as an important platform for global tourism leaders to discuss and advance sustainable practices and innovations within the industry.

The recognition of Sigiriya not only underscores its dedication to preserving both the natural environment and cultural heritage but also aligns with Sri Lanka’s broader vision of promoting eco-friendly and responsible tourism. As a key destination in Sri Lanka, Sigiriya sets a strong example for other sites worldwide, proving that tourism can thrive while respecting and protecting the planet.

With the Green Destinations Bronze Award, Sigiriya’s efforts to protect its unique environment and cultural significance are now internationally acknowledged, setting a high standard for sustainable tourism practices worldwide.
