In a significant development, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Power and Energy to advance the establishment of two solar power plants in Sampur, Trincomalee.

The plants, with a combined capacity of 120 Megawatts, will be developed as a joint venture between Sri Lanka and India.

Cabinet Spokesman, Minister Nalinda Jayatissa, announced that both governments have reached a consensus on the project, which will involve a 50 Megawatt (MW) solar power plant in the first phase (Stage 1) and a 70 MW plant in the second phase (Stage 2).

The joint venture will be carried out by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and India's National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC), focusing on construction, ownership, and operation.

The initial phase of the project will be implemented by the Trincomalee Power Company Ltd, a partnership formed between CEB and NTPC, which was initially set up for the charcoal power project in the area. This partnership aims to contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s renewable energy capacity.

Minister Jayatissa confirmed that the Cabinet has given its approval for the next steps, moving the project forward, which is expected to play a key role in Sri Lanka's transition to renewable energy sources. The collaborative initiative highlights the growing energy partnership between Sri Lanka and India.
