The United National Party (UNP) Working Committee has unanimously agreed to initiate discussions on a potential merger with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB). The decision was made during a meeting at the UNP headquarters, Sirikotha, in Pitakotte, which was chaired by former President and current UNP Leader, Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The committee also resolved to contest the upcoming elections under the banner of the United National Front (UNF), forming a broad coalition with other political parties.

To lead the merger negotiations, the UNP has appointed Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene and General Secretary Thalatha Athukorala. The duo will represent the party in talks aimed at solidifying a partnership with the SJB as they prepare for the elections.

The proposed merger signals a strategic effort to consolidate political forces ahead of the polls, with both parties looking to present a united front to the electorate.
