Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Co-operative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe has confirmed a shortage of red rice in Sri Lanka, attributing the crisis to actions by the former government.

Speaking in Parliament today ( January 8), the Minister claimed that the previous Ranil Wickremesinghe-led government distributed 20 kilos of rice per person, including red rice, free of charge ahead of the Presidential Election. This distribution, he said, included red rice to people who typically do not consume it, leading to the current shortage.

Minister Samarasinghe assured that the current government has taken steps to resolve the issue and maintain a stable supply of rice in the market.

His comments came in response to a query raised by SLPP MP Namal Rajapaksa regarding the scarcity of red rice in the country.
