Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says a public mobilisation and peaceful protest against the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution will be held in Colombo on September 24.
He said the support of all progressive citizens is expected for the protest.
Mr.Premadasa made these remarks while addressing a meeting of Colombo District local government representatives and electoral organisers of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) at the Opposition Leader’s Office on Saturday (13).
He alleged that the government led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is attempting to undermine democracy, judicial independence and the rule of law through the proposed amendment.
The Opposition Leader said the SJB was the first political force to oppose the amendment and would continue its opposition through stronger democratic action.
He further alleged that the government was attempting to establish one-party rule through the 22nd Amendment and concentrate overall power in Pelawatte, adding that such efforts must be defeated.
Mr. Premadasa also said that despite the government securing a two-thirds majority with 159 seats in Parliament by misleading the public, it would not be allowed to undermine the rights of the country’s 22 million people.
He said a strong public movement would be built against the proposed constitutional amendment.
