National Gem and Jewellery Authority Launches Hotline
The initiative, which began on January 6, aims to provide a swift resolution to industry-related issues within a two-week period. According to NGJA Chairman Mr. Navin Suriyarachchi, the hotline will allow individuals to directly contact the Authority's Public Relations Officer through the telephone number 0112 336552.
The Chairman emphasized that the gem and jewellery sector, a key contributor to the national economy, has been significantly affected by various challenges, including unstable and irregular tax policies in Sri Lanka.
In light of the growing global demand for Sri Lankan gems, the NGJA has also outlined plans to establish an International Gem and Jewellery Centre. This centre will feature showrooms, gem museums, laboratories for quality testing, freight transport services, and export facilities, all designed to enhance Sri Lanka's international reputation in the gem and jewellery market.
Mr. Suriyarachchi further stated that the goal of the International Gem and Jewellery Centre is to elevate the sector to one of Sri Lanka's top three export commodities. The Authority aims to contribute an annual export income of US$ 3 billion to the national economy, positioning Sri Lanka as a global hub for gems and jewellery.
This move by the NGJA reflects its commitment to addressing existing challenges in the sector while unlocking new opportunities for growth and international recognition.
