Concerns Raised Over Digital ID Deal with Indian Company
In a letter to Minister Vijitha Herath, the Alliance referred to his recent statement, which revealed that an agreement was made during the president’s visit to India. As per the agreement, the Indian company will manage the issuance of digital IDs, with the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) expected to be finalized in January 2025.
The Alliance warned that the agreement poses significant threats to democratic rights, national security, public safety, the economy, and the sovereignty of Sri Lanka. It emphasized the risks of allowing a foreign country to access the personal data and information of Sri Lankan citizens, stating that such information could be used to undermine a nation’s independence.
The group further accused India of making a strategic intervention in Sri Lanka through this agreement, endangering the public safety of the country’s citizens.
The People’s Struggle Alliance urged the government to reconsider and revoke the decision, suggesting that Parliament introduce a proposal to terminate the agreement. They called for Sri Lanka to adopt technological advancements
