The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has announced a mandatory IMEI registration system for all mobile devices to enhance network security and curb device-related fraud.

Starting January 28, 2025, unregistered IMEI devices will not work on Sri Lankan telecommunication networks. However, devices already connected to local networks before this date will be exempt.

TRCSL urges consumers to buy devices with registered IMEI numbers to avoid connectivity issues. Users can check their device’s registration status by sending an SMS in the format “IMEI <15-digit IMEI number>” to 1909.

For more information, users can call the TRCSL hotline at 1900 or visit their website at www.trc.gov.lk.
