Cases of money fraud through fake WhatsApp messages are increasing in Sri Lanka, with fraudsters targeting individuals by hacking the WhatsApp accounts of well-known people.Once the account is compromised the fraudsters send messages to the contacts in the hacked account requesting money under false pretenses.

Typically, the scam involves the fraudster claiming that they need to send money to a relative and asking the recipient to send the money directly to the relative’s account.

The scammer often provides account details and assures the victim that the money will be repaid soon. If the victim does not realize that the WhatsApp account has been hacked, they may unknowingly transfer the money, which is then stolen by the fraudsters.

The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) has issued warnings, noting that such scams are not limited to WhatsApp but also extend to other social media platforms like Facebook.

They emphasize the importance of being cautious and verifying the authenticity of such requests, especially when they involve transferring money.
