The Attorney General's Department informed the Supreme Court that it will no longer represent former Inspector General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickramaratne and former Defense Secretary Major General (retired) K. Gunaratne. They are named respondents in a fundamental rights petition filed by Former CID Director Shani Abeysekera.

The case was heard yesterday (November 29) by a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices S. Thurairaja, A.H.M.D. Nawaz, and Priyantha Fernando. Additional Solicitor General Viveka Siriwardena informed the court of the Attorney General’s withdrawal of representation for the two respondents, advising them to seek private legal counsel.

The petition, filed by Shani Abeysekera, alleges a violation of his fundamental rights following his transfer from the Director of the CID to the position of Personal Assistant to the Galle DIG after the 2019 Presidential Election and his subsequent suspension.

The court has scheduled the next hearing for February 3, 2025.
