At least eight individuals, including six children, are reported missing after a tractor they were traveling on was caught in flood waters in Karaitivu, Ampara District, this evening. Two children have been rescued, but the remaining individuals, including the children, are still unaccounted for.

According to police, 13 people were on the tractor when it was swept away by strong currents near a bridge close to the Karaitivu bus stand.

The group consisted of 11 boys, the tractor’s driver, and his assistant. The tractor was traveling from Ninthavur to Sammanthurai when it overturned due to the force of the floodwaters.

The group, including students returning home after attending a Madrasa school in Ninthavur, had been traveling along the route when the incident occurred. Authorities confirmed that the missing children, aged between 12 and 16 years, are residents of Sammanthurai.

Five children have been rescued so far, and a full-scale search operation is underway, involving both police personnel and local residents, to locate the missing individuals.

The community is rallying in hopes of a safe rescue, while authorities continue to monitor the situation as floodwaters remain a serious threat to the region.

The police are urging everyone to remain cautious as they continue their efforts to locate the missing persons.
