A special meeting to determine the political direction of the United National Party (UNP) was held yesterday (16), led by party leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Several former UNP Members of Parliament participated in the discussion.

The focus of the meeting was the party’s strategy for upcoming elections, with an emphasis on continuing to contest under the iconic ‘elephant’ symbol.

Following the discussion, UNP Chairman and former MP Abeywardena confirmed to the media that the decision to use the ‘elephant’ symbol was made to enhance party stability and reinforce its identity as it moves forward.

The UNP, one of Sri Lanka's oldest political parties, has been closely linked to the 'elephant' symbol, which continues to play a key role in its identity and voter appeal.
