In a significant move to ensure the transparency and fairness of the upcoming 2024 Parliamentary elections over 10,000 election observers both local and foreign are set to monitor the electoral process across Sri Lanka.
A total of 43 foreign election observers have already arrived in Sri Lanka to observe the election, including representatives from the European Union, with three observers, and 30 from the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL).
Additionally, 10 election observers from neighboring countries are in the island nation to assess the election proceedings.
The majority of observers will be local, with about 10,000 election monitors representing 10 different organizations participating in the monitoring process.
Among these, the People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has deployed the largest contingent, with 5,000 observers working across the country.
Furthermore, eight organizations have received approval from the authorities to carry out mobile surveillance operations, enhancing the oversight capacity during the election.
To ensure the safety and security of all observers, the National Election Commission (NEC) has confirmed that special security measures are in place, offering protection to both local and foreign monitors throughout the election period.
The presence of such a large number of observers highlights the importance of a transparent and credible election process, reinforcing Sri Lanka's commitment to conducting free and fair parliamentary elections.
