Sri Lanka secured a 45run victory over New Zealand in the rain-affected first ODI at Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Sri Lanka, after being put in to bat, posted an impressive total of 324/5 in 49.2 overs before rain interrupted their innings with just four balls remaining.

New Zealand’s revised target, according to the DLS method, was set at 221 in 27 overs. However, despite a strong start, the Kiwis were restricted to 175/9, handing Sri Lanka a comfortable win.

New Zealand's chase got off to a promising start, with openers Tim Robinson (35 off 36 balls) and Will Young (48 off 46 balls) combining for an 88-run partnership in 13.2 overs. But the momentum was broken in the 14th over, as Maheesh Theekshana took two quick wickets, dismissing both openers and leaving New Zealand struggling. From there,

Sri Lanka's bowlers maintained a tight grip, with Theekshana (2/32) and Charith Asalanka (2/32) chipping in, while pacer Dilshan Madushanka was the standout performer, taking 3 wickets for just 39 runs in his 4-over spell.

Earlier, Sri Lanka’s innings saw a brilliant century from Kusal Mendis, who marked his return from injury with a career-best 143 runs. Mendis’ knock helped Sri Lanka recover after opener Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for 12. Alongside Mendis, Dunith Wellalage (40) and the ever-reliable Angelo Mathews (35*) provided crucial contributions.

Kusal Mendis was named Player of the Match for his match-winning performance, which anchored Sri Lanka's commanding total.

The series now moves to the second ODI, where New Zealand will look to bounce back and level the series.
