Voting for the 2024 General Election will Begin at 7 am Today
This election comes at a critical juncture for the country, following widespread anti-government protests and a severe economic crisis that gripped Sri Lanka in 2022.
The protests, which led to the resignation of key political figures, including former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, set the stage for what many see as a pivotal moment in the nation’s political future.
Over 17 million voters, including nearly 900,000 first-time voters, are eligible to cast their ballots in today’s election. Election officials are anticipating a strong turnout as voters head to polling stations across the island nation to elect representatives who will guide Sri Lanka through its post-crisis recovery.
Security has been ramped up for the election, with more than 90,000 police and military personnel deployed to ensure a peaceful voting process. Authorities are on high alert to prevent any disruptions or violence, as tensions remain high due to the political and economic challenges that have marked recent years.
The 2024 general election marks the first major national poll since the economic crisis that saw Sri Lanka face soaring inflation, food shortages, and widespread public discontent. As the country looks to rebuild, voters are expected to play a decisive role in determining the direction of Sri Lanka's future government.
