The Ministry of Education announced that all schools across Sri Lanka will be closed today and tomorrow due to the 2024 General Election, which will be held tomorrow (November 14). This decision, made at the request of the National Election Commission, means schools will reopen on Monday, November 18.
Similarly, all state universities will also remain closed today and tomorrow. The Chairman of the University Grants Commission, Professor Kapila Seneviratne, confirmed that Vice Chancellors have been instructed to ensure these closures.
In addition, the National Election Commission has directed that all employees of private and state banks, as well as financial institutions, should be given leave to cast their votes. The Commission emphasized that this leave must not affect employees' regular leave or salaries. The Commission noted it has received complaints that some financial institutions have not been granting voting leave and has urged compliance.
