The Sri Lankan government is considering the establishment of a dedicated special unit at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake to manage and address flight delays effectively.

This proposal follows a visit by Minister of Aviation, Vijitha Herath, who reviewed the ongoing complaints about delayed flights at the country’s main international airport.

During his visit on Monday, Minister Herath highlighted the importance of a coordinated approach to resolving flight delays, which have been a growing concern for passengers. The proposed special unit would consist of representatives from both the airport and the relevant airlines. Operating 24/7, the unit will provide real-time updates to passengers and ensure they receive adequate facilities and assistance during delays.

Minister Herath also directed airport officials to take proactive steps to minimize delays and improve the overall passenger experience. The new unit will serve as a key point of contact for passengers seeking information, aiming to alleviate frustration and improve communication at the airport.

"We must prioritize the convenience and comfort of passengers, particularly during times of delay," said Minister Herath. "This initiative will not only streamline the flow of information but also provide timely support to those affected by delays."

The establishment of this special unit is part of ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Aviation to modernize airport operations and enhance service quality at BIA, ensuring a smoother travel experience for both locals and international visitors.
