The three sluice gates of the Wellawaya Alikota Ara Reservoir were opened this morning, resulting in the release of large volumes of water directly into the Kirindi Oya river.

This has caused severe flooding in the Kotigamboka area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Wellawaya Divisional Secretariat.

As a result of the floodwaters, two key roads in the region have been submerged, severely obstructing traffic. Local authorities have advised the public to avoid these routes and exercise caution while traveling in the area.

The canal road near the Waterfall Road section of Wellawaya Falls, which directs water to Kirindi Oya, is also experiencing higher water levels. Travelers are urged to remain vigilant while using this road, as the water flow could increase further.

The local administration is closely monitoring the situation and is advising residents and commuters to stay updated on further developments. Emergency services are on standby to assist with any evacuations or road clearances if necessary.

Authorities have also called on the public to report any new flooding incidents or road obstructions immediately to ensure timely response and safety.
