The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has noted inaccurate reports in some local media claiming that Sri Lanka's application for BRICS membership was denied. Following Cabinet approval on October 7, 2024, Sri Lanka officially applied for BRICS membership as well as for membership in the New Development Bank (NDB). Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath notified the BRICS member countries of Sri Lanka's interest, and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake also reached out to Russia's president in support of the application.

During the BRICS Outreach Summit in Kazan, Russia, held from October 22-24, 2024, Foreign Secretary Aruni Wijewardane, leading Sri Lanka’s delegation, reiterated the country’s interest in joining. At the summit, BRICS members introduced a “Partner Country” category and expressed support for the growing interest of countries in the Global South, as reflected in the Kazan Declaration.

Applications from Sri Lanka and other interested nations will be reviewed by BRICS in due time. The New Development Bank President also welcomed Sri Lanka’s intent to join, and the government will work on the necessary steps moving forward.

The ministry emphasized that there is no truth to the claim that Sri Lanka’s BRICS application has been rejected.
