Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal (Retired) Sampath Thuyacontha is currently in Arugam Bay, assessing the security situation in response to recent alerts, the Defence Ministry reported.
On October 23, Israel’s National Security Council issued an urgent warning for Israeli tourists in southern Sri Lanka to leave popular areas like Arugam Bay, classifying it as a level four threat. Israelis were advised to conceal their identity and avoid large gatherings. "The Israeli security establishment is closely coordinating with Sri Lankan authorities to monitor the situation," the council stated.
Similar warnings followed from the US Embassy in Colombo, which cited credible intelligence of a potential threat in Arugam Bay, urging American citizens to avoid the area. The Russian and UK embassies also cautioned their citizens to remain alert and avoid crowded areas.
In response, security has been increased in tourist areas across Sri Lanka, particularly in Arugam Bay.
