The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced that all universities across the island will remain closed on November 13 and 14 in light of the 2024 General Election.
The decision, which was communicated in writing to all Vice Chancellors, Rectors, and Directors of universities, campuses, and institutes by UGC Vice-Chairman, Senior Professor K.L. Wasantha Kumara, aims to ensure that students are able to exercise their voting rights.
The UGC's directive, made at a meeting held on November 7, specifies that both undergraduate and postgraduate students at universities, campuses, and institutes will be granted leave on these two days. This move aligns with the Election Commission's instructions to allow university staff and students the opportunity to vote in the upcoming parliamentary election.
In addition to the public universities, the Election Commission has urged private universities and non-governmental higher education institutions to follow suit and grant leave to their staff and students for the same purpose.
The Election Commission's decision underscores the importance of facilitating voting access for all eligible citizens, including university students, ahead of the crucial 2024 General Election.
