In response to heavy rainfall in the region, the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority has confirmed that two sluice gates at the Polgolla Reservoir have been opened to release water. The gates have been raised by one meter each, allowing a discharge of approximately 140 cubic meters of water per second from each gate.

The decision, made by the engineer on duty, comes as a precautionary measure to manage rising water levels due to the continuous rainfall in the catchment area.

The released water is being directed into the Victoria Reservoir to prevent potential overflow at the Polgolla Reservoir.

The Mahaweli Authority has assured the public that the situation is being closely monitored and that the water release is being managed to ensure the safety of the surrounding communities.

However, authorities are advising residents in low-lying areas near the Victoria Reservoir to remain alert to possible changes in water levels.
