The Chairman of the Sri Lanka Election Commission has confirmed that the upcoming General Election will be held on November 14, 2024, as scheduled. This follows the Supreme Court's decision to dismiss a petition challenging the election date.
In a notable adjustment, 60 polling stations that were initially planned to be located at Buddhist temples have been relocated to other venues. This decision was made to respect the Katina Pinkama ceremonies, a significant religious event in Buddhist temples occurring during this period, as well as other logistical considerations.
The chairman explained that concerns were raised by several groups regarding the use of temples as polling stations while the Katina Pinkama ceremonies were underway. In response, the Election Commission sought input from chief prelates of the temples designated for election purposes. Out of the 2,263 Buddhist temples originally identified as polling venues across Sri Lanka, 45 temples expressed concerns specifically due to the Katina Pinkama ceremonies, while 15 additional temples raised other logistical issues.
As a result, these 60 polling stations were shifted to alternative locations to respect religious events and ensure smooth conduct of the election.
Additionally, the chairman noted that the distribution of official polling cards would continue until 7 November, ensuring voters have adequate time to receive their cards before Election Day.
