Sri Lanka’s External Debt Reaches USD 37.5 Billion as of June 2024

The Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, Policy Formulation, Planning, and Tourism has reported that Sri Lanka's external debt stood at USD 37.5 billion by the end of June 2024. This figure was disclosed in the ministry's Mid-Year Fiscal Position Report for 2024.
From January to June 2024, Sri Lanka made debt service payments totaling USD 503 million, with USD 275.1 million going towards principal repayments and USD 227.9 million for interest payments.
Following the government’s interim debt standstill policy, adopted on April 12, 2022, Servicing of external debt for specific loans from bilateral and commercial lenders has been put on hold temporarily. As a result, by June 2024, outstanding debt had grown to USD 5.67 billion in principal and USD 2.53 billion in interest.
