Leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Sajith Premadasa, has strongly criticized the government, accusing it of failing to keep its promises to the public following Anura Kumara Dissanayake's election as President. Speaking at a gathering in Colombo, Premadasa highlighted those commitments to cut electricity bills by 66%, reduce prices on essential goods, and address delays in passport processing, yet to be fulfilled.

Premadasa challenged the President to act on his pledges, urging immediate reductions in electricity bills, essential goods prices, and taxes. He cautioned the government against misleading the public with unfulfilled promises, stressing that many citizens, already under financial strain, have not received the promised relief.

He emphasized that fulfilling these promises does not require a parliamentary majority, indicating that the government could take action without further delay. He also criticized the lack of tax cuts, suggesting that IMF agreements may be holding the government back, with an IMF review even postponed.  He pointed out that those previously opposing IMF conditions are now “puppets” to IMF directives.

Premadasa assured the public that if the SJB were in power, they would negotiate with the IMF to secure lower taxes, electricity costs, and goods prices. He promised a fresh IMF agreement to ease financial pressures on the public and urged citizens not to be misled by current government negotiations.
