In response to a resurgence of measles cases, health departments across 12 districts are initiating a Measles-Rubella Immunization Week from November 4 to November 9. This initiative aims to combat the spread of measles, particularly among the most affected age group of 20 to 30-year-olds.

Despite being certified by the World Health Organization in 2019 as a country that had eradicated measles, Sri Lanka has reported new cases since May 2020. Health officials warn that one infected individual can transmit the virus to as many as 18 others, underscoring the urgency of this immunization effort.

Measles is highly contagious and can be spread through coughing, sneezing, and contact with contaminated surfaces. The disease poses serious health risks, including pneumonia, brain swelling, blindness, hearing loss, and diarrhea.

Health authorities encourage everyone in the eligible age group to participate in the vaccination campaign to protect themselves and the wider community from this preventable disease.
